About the Project

The Buck Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Buck name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the BUCK name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual team studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Bucks), by time period (18th Century Bucks), or by topic (Buck DNA, Buck Occupations, Buck Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

According to the Y-DNA Buck Surname Project at FamilyTreeDNA there are multiple Buck branches. They seem to have the Haplogroups I-M253, J-M172 and R1a (R-M198 and R-M269) These groups are again subdivided into more groups. Each group probably stems from the same ancestor. For this One Name Study I think it would be interesting to see if we can identify each branch by it's haplogroup. So if you have taken a Y-DNA test, please add it to your profile. WikiTree will automatically mark all your direct male ancestor with your haplogroup.

Teams / Research Pages

At the moment there are no Buck teams. Possible teams could be The English branch, The Denmark/Norway/Iceland Buch/Buck branch and The German Buk branch. There are, of course, more possibilities so if you are working on a specific branch, then please feel free to ask. Right now it is most useful just to keep it at one big group.

Membership

  • Dagmar Thorisdottir - I am a direct descendant of the Danish Buch branch. My fathers Y-DNA test has confirmed the Icelandic branch back to Norway. With a testee from Denmark, we could possibly confirm the line back to about 1400. A lot of work has been done on that branch, and I would like to add that work to WikiTree. A big thank you to the teem behind BUCH-puslespillet. There is a lot of work still to be done and it would be nice to work with a team on that.
    • In 2023 I took over as administrator for the Buck Surname Project on FamilyTree DNA. This gives us the unik opportunity to work parallel with Y-DNA and traditional genealogy. Please take a Y-DNA test, join the Surname Project and add your test to WikiTree.
  • Tommy Buch - I am a direct descendant of Elias Buch (GGF) born in Manheim Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1845. I am hoping to take the Y-DNA test with Family Tree DNA soon. I am currently working to sort out the Buch lines in Pennsylvania.
  • Jean Jenks Adams - My grandmother was a Buck. Her grandfather, Charles Henry Buck was b. abt 1827 in Delaware. He was in Pennsylvania prior to his 1851 marriage to Mary A. McLean, but has not been found in the 1850 census. His mother's name was Ann, also of Delaware. He served in the Civil War. They lived in Bucks County, PA after their marriage. Charles died in 1885. This is my brick wall and would like to find more information about this family.
  • Geoff Buck - I have experiece researching the Bucks of Maine, USA. My earliest known Buck ancestor is George Buck (abt. 1840-1864), a mysterious guy with some kind of connection to the Buckfield branch. My latest harebrained theory is that he was adopted by some Bucks in Corinth and started life as an Ulmer! I hope to take a yDNA test sometime to sort it out.
  • Example: [[Wiki-ID|Name]] - I am interested in the Bucks of Europe during the 18th Century. I am hoping that this research will help me break down one of my brick walls!

I just found your project today. Two years ago I started a Buch Project with the spelling variants Buck, Book and Buk. Since Buck and Buch are known spelling variants of the same name, I was wondering if we could merge the two projects into one.

Thanks for the message! As you can see, this project kind of stalled. As far as I'm aware, it was only really me and John exchanging a few messages and putting up this page. As the manager, I think he would have to to do something to make a merge official.

I'll join the Buch project, though.

Geoff sent me a message about your desire to merge these two projects. I don't really see any reason why not. My own line of the BUCK surname appears to be of British origin, but BUCK appears in Norway, Ireland, Scotland and other countries as well and, perhaps, also has a Germanic tie in somewhere.... so sure, let's combine these two projects.
